Make your Wedding Anniversary a Special Tradition

People celebrate wedding anniversaries in many different ways. Even the same couple may celebrate each one differently depending upon how many years are being marked by each particular anniversary. For a big round number like a twenty year anniversary, they may take a cruise or some other extended vacation together, perhaps returning to their honeymoon destination. For a fourth anniversary, on the other hand, a quiet candle light dinner at home or at a favorite restaurant may be choice. However a person chooses to celebrate, wedding anniversaries are a time to reminisce about the wedding and to spend time reminding your spouse that you’d happily marry them all over again.

The best anniversary celebrations combine a remembrance of the past with the creation of new memories. Travel is a popular way to do that, but with both spouses working, children in the picture, and the expense of travel, it isn’t always possible. However, you choose to celebrate, it’s important that you take time out to reaffirm your feelings for your spouse. Some choose to do this publicly, sometimes with a formal renewal of vows, while others choose a more private and intimate setting to make their feelings known.

One way to bring back memories of the wedding day is to take out one of the more durable and lasting of the saved souvenirs of the wedding day such as the engraved champagne flutes that are typically used by the bride and groom during the toast at the reception. Every year, take out these glasses and make a new toast to each other. Make the toast about your current feelings toward your spouse and a few of the wonderful times you’ve shared since last year’s toast. Make a practice of writing down the toasts and saving them. After few years you can make an evening of sitting together and reading through all the toasts of prior years before adding a new one. This is an inexpensive and very thoughtful way to celebrate an anniversary, but, fair warning, once you start this tradition, don’t ever forget or shortchange the new toast lest you appear to have lost your passion.

The best celebrations involve a very personal touch rather than something canned, and while there should be time for the couple to be together with just each other, bringing family or friends into the celebration can make the day even more special. Anniversary celebrations involving the children help to reinforce the special power of marriage to them and help develop a stronger appreciation for the sanctity of the family.

If you’re planning your wedding, consider adding some souvenir pieces to the reception that can be used as a part of the anniversary celebration each year. Etched glassware, for example is a more durable memento than a personalized matchbook or napkin, though these can be included as well.
